Lawmaker says Rice interfered with Iraq inquiry

By Sue Pleming

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A leading Democratic lawmaker on Tuesday accused Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice of interfering in congressional inquiries into corruption in Iraq’s government and the activities of U.S. security firm Blackwater.

Democratic Rep. Henry Waxman said State Department officials had told the Oversight and Government Reform Committee he chairs they could not provide details of corruption in Iraq’s government unless the information was treated as a “state secret” and not revealed to the public.

“You are wrong to interfere with the committee’s inquiry,” Waxman said in a letter to Rice. “The State Department’s position on this matter is ludicrous,” added Waxman, a vocal opponent of the Bush administration’s Iraq policies.

Weiss said in a statement that “this will be the third time we’re meeting with [Ahmadinejad]. … Every time, we stressed to the Iranian leadership that despite … the declarations by Jews who don’t understand the essence of the matter, we have found the Iranian people and their leaders friendly and respectful.”

He added that Natorei Karta members believed Ahmadinejad was a very religious man who was dedicated to world peace based on mutual respect and dialogue.

Alleged Iranian ‘Front’ Represented by Mukasey Law Firm

Brian Ross and Richard Esposito Report:

Allegediranian_mn For more than 25 years, U.S. intelligence and law enforcement authorities say they have suspected the New York-based Alavi Foundation is a “front” for Iranian espionage and anti-American activities.

For more than 25 years, court records show the foundation has been publicly defended and represented by the New York law firm where attorney-general nominee Michael Mukasey is a partner: Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP.

The foundation says the firm continues to represent it.

Mukasey personally handled at least one matter in court for the foundation.

That case, a real estate dispute, began in 1981 when reports first surfaced that the foundation, originally set up by the Shah, had been taken over by the new Ayatollah and the Islamic Republic of Iran. Mukasey took it to trial in 1984.

Author: Bush nominee helped mask FBI’s pre-9/11 failures and kept al Qaeda’s infiltration of US intelligence from view

This article is quit interesting in that it points to the new DOJ nominee Michael B. Mukasey as the Judge who when presiding over the trial of the blind sheik Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman. Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman was the alleged mastermind of the first WTC attacks in 1993. What makes it interesting is that the Judge was instrumental in keeping the testimony of Ali A. Mohamed who worked for both Al Qaida and the FBI out of the picture. This article asserts that this was to cover up the incompetence of the FBI and the fact that they were unable to prevent the attacks. This of course is not true. The FBI was actively involved in the attacks and it was Ali A. Mohamed who could testify to that effect. It would also out Ali A. Mohamed as a long term agent of the FBI who was involved in numerous False flag Al Qaida attacks on US property. He is known as the man who trained the Arabs involved in the 911 attacks. He became an FBI operative somewere around ’89-’90. This was when George H> W. Bush was president and Cheney secretary of defence. If the Judge was involved in this cover up than they have found another co-conspirator who will never allow for a new 911 investigation and who will act as Bush’s consigliere.

This is the first of two op/ed exposes by Peter Lance, the best-selling author of Triple Cross, which will be released by HarperCollins in a new edition next month.

In the coverage of Michael B. Mukasey, President Bush’s nominee to replace Alberto Gonzales, the line in his resume that has resonated the most with the media is his experience presiding over the 1995 terrorism trial of Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman.

The blind Sheikh, a top al Qaeda confederate who was cited in the infamous Crawford Texas PDB just weeks before 9/11, was convicted with nine others in the so-called “Day of Terror Plot” to blow up New York’s bridges and tunnels, the U.N. and the FBI’s New York office.

Citing the trial in a Sept. 20 New York Times piece that lionized the ex-judge, reporter Adam Liptak described how Mukasey, with “a few terse, stern and prescient remarks,” sentenced the blind sheik to life in prison:

“Judge Mukasey said he feared the plot could have produced devastation on ‘a scale unknown in this country since the Civil War’ that would make the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, which had left six people dead, ‘almost insignificant by comparison.'”

Liptak was correct in citing the 1993 Twin Towers bombing in his story, but he failed to mention that the “Day of Terror” trial was really a desperate attempt by the FBI’s New York office and prosecutors for the Southern District of New York (Mukasey’s old office) to mop up after their failure to stop the blind Sheikh’s “jihad army” prior to its first two attacks on U.S. soil: the murder of Rabbi Meier Kahane in 1990 and the Trade Center bombing on Feb. 26, 1993.

Worse, during the 1995 trial, Judge Mukasey helped bury the significance of Ali A, Mohamed, a shadowy figure who was working at the time for both Osama bin Laden and the FBI.

Radar fails in Memphis; hundreds of flights affected

ATLANTA (CNN) — Air traffic controllers were forced to use their personal cell phones to reroute hundreds of flights Tuesday after the Federal Aviation Administration’s Memphis Center lost radar and telephone service for more than two hours, snarling air traffic in the middle of the nation.

The FAA’s Memphis Center lost communication service Tuesday, affecting FedEx flights and others.

A spokesman for FedEx, which has its hub in Memphis, Tennessee, said the package delivery company had diverted 11 aircraft to other cities. But most of its flights take off and land after 10 p.m., so FedEx expected the impact to be minimal, the spokesman said.

Air traffic was halted at 12:35 p.m. ET when a major communication line that feeds all the telephones at the FAA’s Memphis Center failed, said FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen.

Service was restored at 3 p.m.

The malfunction, which occurred inside a telephone company’s switching office, made it impossible for air controllers at FAA’s Memphis Center to communicate normally with adjoining centers to hand off control of flights, Bergen said.

Security Company Death Squads Timeline

by Dirk Adriaensens and Sarah Meyer
Index Research

Italian Squadristi

There is an uncanny resemblance between the the WW2 Italian Squadristi1, Blackwater and the thousands of other “security” forces.

SECURITY, OED. “The condition of being protected from or not exposed to danger; freedom from doubt; Now, chiefly, well-founded confidence, certainty; freedom from care, anxiety or apprehension.”

There is no such thing as “security”. “Security” companies were formed to make money on our anxieties, just as pharmaceutical companies financially thrive on anxiety about health and have a vested interest in illness.

Dirk Adriaensens has been involved with Iraq for 17 years. He is on the executive committee of the BRussels Tribunal and is the coordinator of SOS Iraq. He writes:

“Security guys and gals don’t have to abide by the Geneva Conventions. They do as they wish. No rules, no regulations. They can operate with impunity.

As such these “security companies” can be called “death squads”. Not “Angels of Death” but “Devils of Death”. For this, they make a lot of money. Privatization of war is big, big business.”

The documentation by The BRussels Tribunal in The Salvador Option Exposed asks “Who is Blowing up Iraq?” There is a full list of articles concerning death squads published on The BRussels Tribunal website.

We have to ask what is the motive for violent occupation, for violence in one’s own country as well as in another’s country. Security Company Death Squads Timeline is a follow – up to Sarah Meyer’s original article, Iraq Security Companies and Training Camps (17.05.06). This first research contained the history with lists of security companies. The present article is resource material which has been collected since May 2006.

Hypocrisy Surrounding Ahmadinejad’s Visit Was Stunning

When you see one person and nation being demonised, you have to assume that it is for a purpose. It is time for some perspective: why should we take it for granted that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is the supreme evil being and a superklutz at the same time?

The ungracious introduction to Ahmadinejad’s talk by Lee Bollinger, the Columbia University president, read more like a plea to Fox News and the ADL to give him a break for not calling off the event. Think of all the people who took umbrage at President Bush’s intellect and morals being belittled last year. Did Bollinger not realize that he was doing Hugo Chavez imitations?

As the born-again atheist author of Rum, and a not infrequent imbiber, I am no great fan of Ahmadinejad. But he was elected by a much clearer majority, with a much bigger turnout, than his equally religious, teetotalling colleague President Bush. And for those impressed by that sort of thing, the Iranian president volunteered for the front in the war against Saddam Hussein – in contrast to Bush, who dodged the draft, and most of the present White House team, who were then enthusiastic backers of Saddam.
